this post is meant to clarify the crochet hexagon pattern, where i made up the name triple cluster (totally misleading) for a fairly common stitch. i just discovered two more-official names for the same stitch.

bobble and puff stitch
(or english and american)
bobble is from the harmony guides book, which was published in london. puff stitch is from an old crochet pattern magazine. and it's published in new jersey.
i have no idea what the japanese call this stitch. it's a good thing, i guess. i'm confused enough as it is.

thanks to rie in japan for this insightful comment:
hello! puff or bobble stitch is called 'tama ami' in Japanese. 'tama'
means 'ball' and 'ami' means knit or crochet. We always indicate number
of stitches that form a bobble or puff. The instruction you found is
called 'bobble/puff stitch with 3 double crochet'. Hope this helps!
